True Life: We break a sweat every time we watch Rocky Balboa scale those 72 steps on the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Anyone else know the feeling? Maybe it's the fear that it will inspire our significant others to stop being lazy and attack their 53 item to-do-list and not continue being couch potatoes with us. Not saying tackling some tasks isn't somewhat rewarding, but our internal motivation ebbs and flows more than the sun appearing in Portland —some days, it's there in full force and other days full-blown hibernation mode. With that in mind, we've rounded up the best articles to help you tap into your inner motivation and become your own Rocky Balboa.

HOW TO GET MOTIVATED (EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE IT) 

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SCHEDULE AND A RITUAL MIGHT BE WHAT YOU NEED TO REMOTIVATE YOURSELF. 

Are your days starting to feel repetitive and boring? Perhaps it's time to change your routine and create a new ritual. We know what you're thinking, aren't routines and rituals the same thing? We hear you; they are very similar. But they differ in crucial and meaningful ways. The real difference is the attitude behind actions. Routines are doing what needs to be done, done. Rituals, on the other hand, are more meaningful. Each ritual is a practice that has a real sense of purpose. 

If we look at top creatives' work, it is not a routine that they follow; instead, they develop a consistent pattern or ritual.  The key to a good ritual is that it removes the need to decide: what should I do first, when should I do this, and how should I do this? In creating a ritual, you will develop so automatic and comfortable reactions that when things become difficult and challenging, you will be unphased.

RE-EVALUATE YOUR HUMAN NEEDS FOR MOTIVATION 

DISCOVER YOUR PRIMAL HUMAN NEEDS AND TAKE INVENTORY OF WHAT NEEDS AREN’T BEING MET TO LIVE A MORE MOTIVATED AND FULFILLED LIFE. 

There are six human needs that fundamentally affect the way we make choices and our motivation. Understanding them and taking inventory of what needs aren't being met is a simple way to remotivate yourself. Let's dive in! 

  1. Certainty: everyone needs certainty, safety, stability, and predictability in their lives. Humans innate desire to feel secure in our lives: our homes, relationships, and jobs. Avoiding pain and ensuring our basic needs are being met is a primal instinct. Some people pursue this need for certainty by striving to control every aspect of their lives. When we lack confidence, we tend to panic and get stress. When things get too certain, we get bored and unmotivated. 

  2. Variety: a direct contrast to the first primal human need is the need for variety. Working simultaneously as a certainty, we also crave excitement and change. Variety makes us feel engaged and alive. Too much uncertainty brings us fear, but the right amount keeps us motivated. 

  3. Significance: everyone wants to feel unique, memorable, and consequential. We desperately want our life and work to have importance and meaning. Can you imagine how unmotivated you'd feel if a project you were working on was unnecessary and something nobody cared about? Fulfilling our need for significance comes in a variety of different vehicles. One is by becoming an overachiever. Another is by putting other people down to make ourselves feel better. 

  4. Connection: Everyone desires a need for association and affiliation with the people around them. We all want to be loved, cared for, and feel a closeness or union with like-minded people, whether family, friends, colleagues or more. Much of the need for connection comes from the desire to blend in and belong. 

  5. Growth: As humans, we all feel the need to grow and expand our personal and professional lives, whether it is to reach a specific position, a particular lifestyle, or a financial target. As human beings, we all need to grow and expand in our personal and professional lives. Everyone needs something to strive for, challenge us and increase our lives emotionally, spiritually, physically, financially, and intellectually. 

  6. Contribution: The last human need is the desire to make a difference and contribute to the greater good. As humans, we innately desire to contribute something of value. 

We invite you to examine these six human needs and decipher for yourself which of them you value most and how you are meeting your needs. Ask yourself, which two of the six human needs are most important, and what are the ways, both good and bad, in which you meet and balance these needs?

SIGNS YOU NEED AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT (AND HOW TO DO IT)

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENTS ARE OFTEN NECESSARY. HERE ARE SOME SIGNS THAT YOU’RE IN NEED OF AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT ASAP AND HOW TO MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES. 

Not sure about you, but growing up, our parents told us multiple times a week that we needed an attitude adjustment. Honestly, it might have been the most repeated phrase while we were teenagers. While we rolled our eyes and didn't take the command with seriousness or sincerity, today, we realize the real impact attitude has on our lives. And, of course, realize, our parents were likely absolutely correct when they told us to have an attitude adjustment. 

An attitude is a powerful tool. It has a direct impact on how willing or unwilling we are to do something. Sometimes we find ourselves in a rut and don't realize that our attitude is preventing us from greatness and keeping us from being motivated. The cold hard truth is that everyone needs attitude adjustments every once in and while, and it's a continual, ongoing process. Sometimes, we don't realize how our attitudes affect our lives and how our attitude affects others. Here are some tell-tale signs that you might need to make some attitude adjustments so you can snap out of it and live a better, happier life. 

Venting versus Complaining. Are you venting, or are you complaining? That isn't THE question, but it still is an incredibly important one! Venting is a method of getting what you need off of your chest so you can move on with your life. Complaining, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game. The real problem with complaining is that you're not solving the issue at hand, and instead, you are often just perpetuating the dilemma. How to snap out of it? Start looking into what you're complaining about and decide what you can do to make changes. Talk to the people you need to talk to and solve the issues causing you to waste energy on unnecessary issues. 

Excuses, excuses, excuses. Are you making excuses as to why you didn't do or achieve? In making excuses, you are avoiding taking responsibility for your circumstances. We all have the opportunity to make excuses, but every single time is an opportunity not to make an excuse. If you're late, it's not because of the traffic; it's because you didn't allow enough time to get where you need to go. We can go on and on for days, but the major takeaway is to catch yourself making excuses and stop it as soon as it happens. Doing so will allow you to feel so much better because while you'll undoubtedly take on more blame, you will simultaneously gain accountability and integrity. Take back your power and stop making excuses! 

A negative energy forcefield. In most situations, people who are putting out negative energy are entirely oblivious that that's what they're doing. Take a step back and examine the way you interact in the world. When things go wrong, do you immediately get frustrated, angry, or depressed? When you are given a new assignment, are you accepting it with enthusiasm or with annoyance? Even if you're not putting out negative energy, what if you paid extra special attention to ensuring that you are putting out positive energy? Bring positive energy to all situations regardless of the outcome with no prior plan. Soon, you'll discover that you're feeling happier, and people will respond to you positively.

HOW TO CREATE A SIGIL 

TAP INTO MAGIC

Essentially, it’s a unique symbol created by you, with unique meaning to you, like a personal logo. The process in creating a sigil is therapeutic and its outcome will motivate you to live a life that’s embedded with your wishes and lives up to your symbol. The best part? Only you will know what your sigil means! Ready to get started? Read on for how to create (and use) a sigil…

1. Acknowledge Your Intention

Grab a notebook and pen! The best things in life begin with purpose and sigils are a special way to encourage you to learn and understand your intention (for life, work, etc.). Acknowledge your intention and write it down. It can be as simple as one word, like “happy.” 

2. Remove Vowels and Repeats

Take a look at the intention you have written and cross out all of the vowels and any letters that repeat. You'll want to leave only one of each consonant from the original sentence. 

3. Simplify (if you’d like)

This step is optional, but here, you can choose to break down the letters into shapes that are simpler lines and curves. Otherwise, leave them as is. Up to you! 

4. Start Arranging

It’s time to get creative! Arrange the shapes and work to fit them into a single glyph. Make as many options as you’d like. It may take some time to form them into a shape that feels right to you, so give yourself time and allow creativity to flow. 

5. Take Your Pick 

Now that you have options, pick a symbol that feels most powerful to you. Ta-da! This is your sigil. Invision your deepest wish and watch the magic show unfold! To remind yourself daily of your intention and sigil, try using it as your email password, carry it with you or hang it somewhere you see every day, like on your bathroom mirror. When you regularly express your wishes they become easier for the universe to help make them come true!
